San Angelo Soccer Association (SASA) is a volunteer-driven organization committed to building community through soccer. Whether you're looking to serve on the board, support a team, or help behind the scenes, there are meaningful ways to get involved. This guide outlines all opportunities to serve, what they require, and how to get started.
BOARD POSITIONS
Age Group Commissioners
- What is it? Commissioners act as the primary point of contact for all coaches and parents within their assigned age group.
- Time Commitment: ~8 hours/week during the season; must be present at the complex for at least half of each game day. Required to be at all SASA tournaments/events.
- Responsibilities:
- Serve as liaison between parents for assigned age group and the board. If there are coach issues, you will coordinate with the Coaches Representative and Board to resolve
- Field parent questions and escalate issues when needed
- Help verify coach compliance (SafeSport, GotSport, etc.)
- Attend board meetings to vote and contribute to organizational growth
- Who Supports Me? Other commissioners, the registrar, coaches rep, and the executive board.

Field Director
- What is it? Ensures the facility is operational, safe, and ready on game day.
- Time Commitment: Variable dependent upon field needs and priorities. Expect at least 8-12 hours per week during the season.
Responsibilities: - Open/close complex on game day
- Confirm field readiness (nets, holes, lines, flags)
- Maintain SASA-owned field equipment

Field Marshal Volunteers
- What is it? Field Marshals assist on game days by being visible, informed points of contact for families, coaches, referees, and board members.
- Time Commitment: Shifts available in 1-3 hour blocks on Saturdays.
- Responsibilities:
- Wear a SASA vest and carry a walkie talkie to stay in touch with board members
- Answer questions from parents and direct them to the right resources or areas of the complex
- Check in with referees and board members periodically. Report activity that goes against Bylaws, Playbook, or otherwise negatively impacts the safe soccer environment
- Support board members during field emergencies (injuries, equipment, etc.)
- Why It Matters: Field Marshals improve communication, safety, and customer service at the complex.
- Who Supports Me? Board, Field Director, and Referee Coordinator.
- Best Practices Reference: Many grassroots and USYS-affiliated leagues use field marshals to reduce confusion, assist with emergencies, and support referees. They are especially important in large complexes where board members are not always immediately visible.

TEAM-LEVEL VOLUNTEER ROLES
Head Coach
- What is it? The lead volunteer responsible for the team’s practices, games, and player experience.
- Time Commitment: 3–4 hours/week during the season.
- Responsibilities:
- Plan and run practices using SASA resources or personal knowledge and experience
- Communicate with parents to build and foster a safe and positive soccer environment
- Focus on player and team development both on the field and in the community
- Abide by all SASA Bylaws, Playbooks, and other governing requirements.
- Requirements: Must be certified in SafeSport and listed in GotSport. SASA provides training support.
- How to Sign Up: During registration or by contacting your commissioner.
Assistant Coach
- What is it? Supports the head coach during practices and games.
- Time Commitment: 3-4 hours/week during the season.
- Responsibilities:
- Assist head coach Plan and run practices using SASA resources or personal knowledge and experience
- Support head coach on game day, or step in when coach cannot be available. Assume all responsibilities of the Head Coach if necessary
- Abide by all SASA Bylaws, Playbooks, and other governing requirements.
- Approval Required: Head Coach must submit written approval to SASA.
- Requirements: SafeSport and GotSport compliance.
Team Manager
- What is it? A team parent who supports communication and logistics.
- Time Commitment: 1–2 hours/week.
- Responsibilities:
- Coordinate snacks, team communications, and updates
- Help relay info from coaches to parents
- May step in to coach games if both coaches are unavailable
- Approval Required: Head Coach must email SASA with written approval.
- Requirements: SafeSport and GotSport compliance.
