What It Means to Join the SASA Board

As a Board Member of the San Angelo Soccer Association (SASA), you are not simply overseeing operations or showing up to meetings. You are making a public commitment to the game of soccer, to the children and families of San Angelo, and to the long-term vision of making soccer a cornerstone of our city’s culture. This is not a title—it is a stewardship.

To reflect that responsibility, all Board Members will align to the following commitments and cultural tenets. These are not formal bylaws or policies. These are guiding expectations that shape how we serve, grow, and lead together.

Board Commitments

  1. Be Present on Game Days
All Board Members are expected to serve at the complex for at least half of each game day. If game days span 7 hours, you are committing to being present and engaged for a minimum of 3.5 hours. This is the heart of our service—we show up where our community shows up.

  1. Stay Informed & Involved
Each Board Member commits to spending at least 4 hours per month engaging with soccer outside of meetings and official league operations. This could include:
  • Playing in or spectating a local league (adult, middle school, high school, ASU)
  • Watching a match with your family
  • Attending a coaching session or training
  • Reading, listening, or learning about the sport

This ensures we are not just governing from the outside, but living within the sport we serve.

  1. Integrate Soccer into Your Life
Our culture grows when our board models what it looks like to live it. Members are encouraged to:
  • Play soccer in a public space (park, schoolyard, etc.) with family or friends at least once per month
  • Invite others into the sport with you
  • Talk about the game with your children, neighbors, or coworkers

You do not need to be a former player or expert. You simply need to love the game enough to make it part of your world.

  1. Commit to the Long-Term Vision
We are actively building a better complex, stronger partnerships, and broader access to the sport. Board Members should support and participate in:
  • Strategic planning and fundraising initiatives
  • Building relationships with sponsors and city leaders
  • Championing SASA's role as both a nonprofit and a professional community organization
  1. Be a Bridge Between Soccer and the Community
Board Members should take initiative to:
  • Represent SASA positively in public
  • Invite new families into the sport and listen to their experience
  • Help build pathways for more inclusive access across San Angelo

Cultural Tenets of SASA Board Service

Love the Game
We do not expect perfection, but we do expect passion. Grow your relationship with the game over time. Let it surprise you. Let it matter.

Model the Culture You Want to Build
Be generous. Be humble. Be curious. Lead by example. If we want San Angelo to care about soccer, we need to show them what that looks like.

Serve with Purpose
Our mission is bigger than a single season. We are building something that will outlast us. Serve with that perspective. Every task, no matter how small, is part of a larger legacy.

Operate with Professional Standards
We are building partnerships, stewarding funds, and managing growth. Our expectations are high—and rightly so. This is a nonprofit with a business mindset and a heart for service. Show up with clarity, follow-through, and intention.

Stay Rooted in the Community
We are not detached. We are deeply embedded in the lives of the families we serve. Stay accessible. Stay human. Build trust through presence and care.

Joining the SASA Board means saying yes to more than meetings. It means saying yes to a movement.
